Making New Year's Resolutions - by Joel Arnold, TTNLearning You know the drill. It’s the start of a new year. You make your New Year’s resolutions on January 1st, and if you’re lucky, you won’t break them until January 10th. There’s a simple reason for this; resolutions are vague creatures. They’re not true goals. If you want to accomplish something new or important this year, you must turn your resolution into a goal. A resolution is, “I will lose weight in 2009!” A goal is, “I will weigh 180 lbs on December 31st, 2009. Here’s how I will accomplish this.” Write your goal down. Be specific, with actual, measurable numbers, and dates. (Why is it important to write down goals? What facts reinforce specificity in goal setting?) With a concrete end in mind, figure out how to break that time down into smaller, measurable goals. “Let’s see, I weigh 240-lbs now, so I must lose 60-lbs to accomplish my goal. That’s 5-lbs a month, or a little over a pound a week.” When broken out like that, losing 1+ lb a week seems a lot more manageable than 60-lbs in a year! Now ask yourself, how do I lose 1+ lb a week? (Or earn an extra $500 a week, or write a page of a novel a day, or spend an extra hour with the kids a week, etc.) Again, be specific. “I’ll cut out my daily candy bar. I’ll spend an extra 20 minutes walking every night. Instead of fast food for lunch, I’ll pack a healthy lunch for work.” Make a list and commit to choosing one item each day from your list to work on reaching your goal. Then it’s time to act! In fact, if you don’t take some action on your goal within a day or two, chances are, you won’t take action in a week, or a month, or a year. Review your progress and reassess throughout your chosen time period. How can we use others (accountability) to help us reach our goals? How does training (TTN) or learning help us with resolutions or goals in our life? A New Year is starting and it is also a great time to start new initiatives as an organization… what are your goals as a company? How do you plan to participate in reaching them? A great way to stay focused is to watch and listen to TTN’s numerous inspirational and motivational courses! Brian Tracy has 2 courses specifically on setting goals: Five Steps To Goal-Setting and Strategic Goal-Setting. Log in and start today! I’d love to hear your goals for 2009, as well as your progress throughout the year. Send your goals to me at jarnold@ttnlearning.com. The first 10 respondents will receive a
