Perseverance -by Joel Arnold, TTNLearning

In Minnesota, there are at least a few days every winter when it’s not unusual to shovel a thick layer of snow from your driveway, only to have a snowplow drive by and block your exit with yet another heavy pile of snow and ice. So you dig out again. Scrape and brush the ice and snow from the windshield. Back out carefully from the driveway, and as you finally pull forward, check out the slickness of the road’s surface before putting the pedal to the metal.

But wait! As you approach the highway, the road is backed up with cars, barely inching along.

It’s one of those days.

But you know what? You pull forward. Inch by inch, foot by foot, mile by mile, your foot dancing from brake to gas pedal, and eventually you get there. As you drive, the inches, the feet, the miles may seem tedious and boring, but you persevere. The road passes slowly, but it does pass.

So why is it that we sometimes are unable to accomplish our goals? Is it because we give up before we’ve even scraped the ice off the windshield? Do the steps required to reach our goals seem so tedious and boring, that instead of persevering, we just pull over to the side of the road and let all the other vehicles pass us? It’s an easy trap to fall into, but try to remember that oftentimes you have to keep the gears moving, the gas flowing, no matter how slow the going, to get where we want to go. Yes, the road sometimes passes slowly, but if you persevere, it does eventually pass. And then, after you blink away the snowflakes and stomp the slush from your shoes, you realize that the goal you’ve been striving for, reaching for, persevering for is in your hands, and nobody can take that away from you.

February 2 - In South Africa, the 30-year-old ban on the African National Congress was lifted by President F.W. de Klerk, who also promised to free Nelson Mandela and remove restrictions on political opposition groups.(1990)

February 3 - One of the most extraordinary acts of heroism during World War II occurred in the icy waters off Greenland after the U.S. Army transport ship Dorchester was hit by a German torpedo and began to sink rapidly. When it became apparent there were not enough life jackets, four U.S. Army chaplains on board removed theirs, handed them to frightened young soldiers, and chose to go down with ship. (1943)

February 6 - Legendary baseball player George Herman "Babe" Ruth (1895-1948) was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Ruth held or shared 60 major league records, including pitching 29 consecutive scoreless innings and hitting 714 home runs.

February 8 - The Boy Scouts of America was founded by William Boyce in Washington, DC, modeled after the British Boy Scouts. (1910)

February 14 - The St. Valentine's Day massacre occurred in Chicago as seven members of the Bugs Moran gang were gunned down by five of Al Capone's mobsters posing as police.(1929)

February 24 - Pope Gregory XIII corrected mistakes on the Julian calendar by dropping 10 days and directing that the day after October 4, 1582 would be October 15. The Gregorian, or New Style calendar, was then adopted by Catholic countries, followed gradually by Protestant and other nations. (1582)

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.

             ~
Pierre de Coubertin        (founder of modern Olympic Games)

"The Olympics remain the most compelling search for excellence that exists in sport, and maybe in life itself."

              ~ Dawn Fraser
(Australian swimmer, 3-time winner at the Olympics)

“It is the inspiration of the Olympic Games that drives people not only to compete but to improve, and to bring lasting spiritual and moral benefits to the athlete and inspiration to those lucky enough to witness the athletic dedication.”

              ~
Herb Elliot
(Australian middle- distance runner 1958- 67)

~ The early Olympic Games were celebrated as a religious festival from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D., when the games were banned for being a pagan festival (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus). In 1894, a French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, proposed a revival of the ancient tradition, and thus the modern-day Olympic Summer Games were born.

~ Norway has won the most medals (263) at the Winter Games.

~ The United States has won more medals (2,189) at the Summer Games than any other country.

~ The five Olympic rings represent the five major regions of the world – Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceana, and every national flag in the world includes one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red.

~ Nearly half of the people who sell their houses with furniture included will take all the light bulbs out of all the lamps when they vacate the premises.

ZigOn: Politicians

A "politician" has been described as a genius who can open the door of your car with one hand, help you in with the other, and still have one hand left to pat you on the back and ask for your vote. Yes, as the saying goes, at one time in America we told political jokes and now we elect them.

Think about what you just read. At one time in our history, to be elected to the Congress or the Senate of the United States was one of the highest honors we could bestow on anyone. The people we sent to highest political offices were people of integrity, goodwill, intense patriotism, and had a desire to serve their country. We created what is universally recognized as the finest political system in the world. It has functioned effectively for well over 200 years. Unfortunately, the system has developed some serious "glitches," and too often we send politicians, not statesmen or stateswomen, to Washington.

Question: Do we improve that system or further destroy the system by constantly maligning the people in the offices that we ourselves sent them to fill? If they're not capable people of integrity, what does that say about us? It's true that we get what we expect, so it's also true that if we expect and demand more of our representatives and ourselves, we will get more from them and from ourselves.

Solution: Keep closer account on what members of the House and Senate do. When they do something of note--and many consistently do exactly that--write a letter to the editor and send a copy of it to that publicly elected official. If we praise those good public officials (and there are many) and start honoring them for the work they do, we will attract more capable people to serve in public office which means we'll have better government. Think about it and I'll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

What do "experts" know anyway?
 by Dr. Tony Alessandra

A number of the world's all-time great geniuses were at first thought to be anything but gifted.

Einstein, we know, left school in Germany because of poor grades in history and the language arts. The problem wasn't Einstein, of course, but the type of learning he was forced to do...
